I was able to walk to the Western Wall from my room and found I was welcomed after showing my US passport and passing through a metal detector. Many people went there to pray. The wall is divided by a partition to separate the men's place of prayer from the women's place of prayer. This is in the Jewish Quarter of Old Jerusalem The western wall enclosed the platform the Herodian Jewish Temple was built upon. There are no walls of the original temple left standing as it was destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD after a four year war of independence by the Jews was reaching its miserable end. |
